PATHWAY 1: K-12 Two Way Russian Immersion

Two way immersion programs aim to serve both minority language and majority language students utilizing both groups as native speaker models. Of the students in the immersion class 50% will have Russian as a first language, while most of the other half will have English as their first language. Approximately half of the school day will be taught in Russian.

  • 2007 - 2008 Kindergarten at Kelly Elementary
  • Growing by one grade level each year, thereafter

PATHWAY 2: 3rd - 5th Grade Foreign Language in the Elementary School (FLES)

A Russian language and culture FLES program will be provided beginning with 3rd and 4th grade students at the project elementary site (except for those in the Two Way Immersion Pathway). The Russian FLES will grow incrementally both in weekly instruction time and grade levels.

  • 2007 - 2008 Grades 3 & 4
  • 2008 - 2009 Grades 3 - 5
  • 2009 and beyond Grades 3 - 8
  • Upon completion of the 8th grade, students will have the opportunity to continue their Russian studies through the High School Pathways

PATHWAY 3: High School Russian for Heritage Speakers

Russian for heritage speakers will infuse content instrucution with explicit Russian language and literacy instruction to begin preparing students for Advanced Placement (AP) Russian.

  • 2007 - 2008 Heritage Russian (1 course)
  • 2008 - 2009 Heritage Russian (2 courses)
  • 2009 - 2010 Heritage Russian Courses and AP Russian

PATHWAY 4: Russian as a Foreign Language

This Pathway provides Russian language and culture study as an option for English-speaking students, students of other languages, and for students of other Slavic languages whose skills may not be strong enough to enroll in the Heritage Russian Pathway. The HS Russian as a Foreign Language Pathway also provides students from the FLES Pathway with the option to continue their Russian studies in high school, preparing them for AP Russian.

  • 2007 - 2008 First Year Russian
  • 2008 - 2009 First and Second Year Russian
  • 2009 - 2010 First, Second and Third Year Russian
  • 2010 and beyond First through Fourth Year Russian and AP Russian
